Working on Losing 40 Pounds after Cesarean Section

When I became pregnant, I didn’t just gain the healthy 30-35 pounds recommended.  I gained almost 70.  I whined about it in this post a few months ago.

As a result, I developed a racing heart rate and had a pretty hard time with exhaustion toward the end.  I also didn’t have the luxury of bouncing back to my pre-baby weight quickly; I have one friend who lost all of her baby weight within two weeks.

I’ve been trying to eat right and be active for a couple of weeks, but I still don’t like looking in the mirror these days and it’s pretty easy to feel down.  Then I saw this inspirational blog.  I love how upbeat it is and how accepting she is of the challenge ahead.  I want my journey to be positive too!

I have some special considerations; I have to be very careful not to over-diet or I’ll not be able to adequately nurse the baby.  I had a c-section, so I can’t do a lot of exercises just yet or I risk injury.  I’m planning on taking it easy and watching my diet carefully.  I’m buying this book to help with good exercises that won’t be too much.

Speaking of my diet, I’m a flexitarian who is currently also not eating any dairy products.  The no-dairy is somewhat temporary and is because it is the number one allergy issue with nursing infants, so I’m avoiding it just in case.

Does anyone know of any books with good veg/vegan diets?

  1. I suspect that you will hit your goal before I hit mine. I’ve always been impressed with how disciplined you can be with this stuff.

  2. This time isn’t as easy, though! I can’t just fast when I feel like it, or make up for greasy fries by having a Slim-Fast the next meal.

  3. Hey, girl! Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday and leaving such a nice comment! I’m glad you did, because now I can visit you and see how you’re doing with your journey! I hope I can continue to be an inspiration to you. At least you have a legitimate excuse for gaining 70 pounds. You were pregnant. I gained 60 pounds since February…and there is definitely no baby in the house. lol

  4. As far as pregnancy as a “legitimate” excuse for gaining 70 pounds, you are half right. Sure, I needed to gain weight, but every time I ate three candy bars in one sitting, I was not doing it for the baby, I was making excuses and eating junk.

No more excuses- I’m trying to eat healthfully and limit how often I treat myself.

  5. Ok, first of all, the Let’s Be Friends blog is adorable. My early fave: http://letsbefriends.blogspot.com/2007/01/pony-and-cat.html

Secondly, sounds like you’re being totally healthy and reasonable about your weight goals. I don’t have children but am always shocked and concerned about how quickly Hollywood Moms lose baby weight. Case in point: Kery Russel 11 days after having given birth: http://popsugar.com/334789 So unrealistic.

Finally, some vegan blogs I like:
    -Fat-Free Vegan Kitchen: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/
-Don’t Get Mad, Get Vegan http://dgmgv.blogspot.com/
    -MDM*intake http://mdmintake.blogspot.com/
    -Where’s the Revolution? http://www.wherestherevolution.blogspot.com/
-Vegan Lunch Box (not frequently updated but good links & inspiration) http://veganlunchbox.blogspot.com/

  6. KNH, I have a LOT of veggie (and some vegan) cookbooks if you want to borrow any. And don’t forget Moosewood! I haven’t bought milk in over a year and just use soymilk in all my cooking, though of course I don’t cook that often.

My favorite vegan blog with lots of stuff that looks yummy is http://tofu-n-sproutz.blogspot.com/ She’s a busy single mom and still fits in good food, and she’s a really nice person too! Her veggie daughter has a funny blog too.

  7. “Does anyone know of any … good veg/vegan diets?”

Is there such a thing? If I go more than a day without
meat, I feel like I can’t even lift my arms. The term
“flexitarian” seems like a handy word, and representative
of a more Classical mindset. “All things in moderation,
nothing to excess” and all that.

  8. Yes, Ken, there is such a thing. Trying it for a day doesn’t qualify you as an expert. 🙂 During my switch I felt crummy for about a week, and all has felt very normal since then. Plus KNH has already been on such a diet for quite some time now.
